I serve as Professorial Lecturer in the Department of Management and as Academic Director of AU's Sustainability Minor, and the Sustainability specialization and MS in Sustainability Management in the Kogod School of Business at American University in Washington, DC. I am also Affiliated Research Faculty with the AU Center for Innovation in the Capital.
I earned my PhD in Public Policy and a MSc in Applied Economics with a minor in International Development from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Go Tigers! I earned my BSc in Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resource Management from EARTH University in Costa Rica, which was nominated for a 2016 Nobel Peace Prize for its commitment to "training leaders of change dedicated to creating a more peaceful and just society."
My research interests lie at the intersection of entrepreneurship and regional science, and include regional innovation, entrepreneurial finance, crowdfunding, corporate social responsibility, the sharing economy, and entrepreneurship policy.
My work has been published in Regional Studies, Journal of Business Ethics, Small Business Economics, Entrepreneurship Research Journal, Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Development, and Adapting to Climate Change in the Bolivian Highlands (book chapter).
My research has been presented at national and international conferences, including the Annual Meetings of the North American Regional Science Council & Regional Science Association International (NARSC), the Academy of Management (AOM), the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), the International Association for Society and Resource Management (IASRM), the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM), and the Rural Wealth Creation and Livelihoods Conference.
